The National is an acclaimed American indie-rock band from Cincinnati, formed in Brooklyn in 1999. The lineup consists of charismatic frontman Matt Berninger (vocals), twin brothers Aaron Dessner (guitar, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), as well as brothers Scott (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Their introspective and artful sound—marked by poetic lyrics, layered instrumentation, and emotional depth—has solidified their position as indie-rock icons.
Their ninth studio album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein (April 2023), featured collaborations with Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift, and earned praise as a creative rebirth. A surprise tenth album, Laugh Track, followed in September 2023, showcasing experimental textures and guest vocalists like Vernon, Bridgers, and Cash. In December 2024, they released the live album Rome, recorded at Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica.
Unconventional writing methods—like improvisatory soundcheck jams during the 2024 tour—hint at an upcoming eleventh studio album, which the band describes as “loose and improvised”.
While The National itself has scaled back large-scale touring, frontman Matt Berninger has launched his second solo album, Get Sunk (May 30, 2025), supported by North American and European tour dates through early autumn.
They also continue their Homecoming Festival tradition in Cincinnati with themed lineups and two unique headlining sets – a celebration of their deep connection to hometown and fans.
