The Flaming Lips are an American psychedelic rock band from Oklahoma City, formed in 1983. The band is led by eccentric frontman Wayne Coyne, supported by longtime member Steven Drozd, along with newer additions Derek Brown, Matt Kirksey, and Tommy McKenzie. Together, they create a rich, experimental sound that draws from neo-psychedelia, alternative rock, and layered sonic textures.
Their breakthrough to a wider audience came with the album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart (1993) and the single “She Don’t Use Jelly,” but their iconic status was solidified with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)—its title track remains one of their most recognizable songs. In 2020, they released their sixteenth studio album, American Head, which was praised as “ethereal and deeply American,” and marked the final recording with their original six-piece lineup.
This year, they returned with a new tour featuring dramatic live performances with massive visual installations—including the band’s trademark transparent bubble, which Coyne often uses to roll over the crowd—turning each show into something like a birthday party for grown-ups. They’re also co-headlining a U.S. tour with Modest Mouse, which began in August 2025.
The band remains a frequent presence on European stages as well—performing in Cologne, Berlin, and Hamburg in June 2025. Their concerts are widely regarded as gems of the live music experience: experimental psychedelia woven into a vibrant visual spectacle, full of dazzling lights and cascading confetti.
