Sia (full name Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, born December 18, 1975, in Adelaide, Australia) is one of the most recognizable and innovative singers, songwriters, and producers in contemporary pop music. With a career spanning more than two decades, she is known for her distinctive voice, exceptional songwriting ability, and enigmatic public image, often performing with wigs or with her face obscured.
She began her career in the 1990s as the singer of the acid jazz band Crisp before pursuing a solo path. Her breakthrough came with the albums Healing Is Difficult (2001) and Colour the Small One (2004), the latter featuring “Breathe Me” – a song that achieved global recognition after being used in the final scene of the acclaimed TV series Six Feet Under.
Sia achieved her greatest international fame in the 2010s, both as a performer and as a hit songwriter for other artists. She penned megahits such as “Diamonds” (Rihanna), “Titanium” (David Guetta), “Pretty Hurts” (Beyoncé), and “Wild Ones” (Flo Rida). At the same time, she solidified her own career with 1000 Forms of Fear (2014), featuring the smash single “Chandelier.” Its iconic music video, starring young dancer Maddie Ziegler, went viral and became emblematic of Sia’s artistic vision.
She followed with This Is Acting (2016), an album largely composed of songs originally intended for other artists but interpreted by Sia herself, producing hits like “Cheap Thrills,” “Alive,” and “The Greatest.” In 2021, she released Music – Songs from and Inspired by the Motion Picture, tied to her directorial debut Music. Her work is often associated with striking visual concepts and dance-based artistic performances.
Sia is also known for her struggles with anxiety, depression, and her commitment to maintaining privacy. By frequently concealing her face, she shifted the spotlight to her art, emphasizing voice, dance, and strong audiovisual aesthetics over celebrity image.
To date, Sia has sold millions of albums and earned numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy nominations, Golden Globe nominations, and even an Academy Award nomination for the song “Together” from Music. She is regarded as one of the most successful pop songwriters of recent decades, with her compositions regularly topping charts worldwide—whether performed by herself or other artists.
