Hey, this is Shawn James.
I've had way too many writers think they can summarize me and what I stand for after a one-hour interview to write my "biography"—but I'm done with that. Forget it. I'd rather tell my own story.
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois—on the South Side, where I attended a gospel church. I was surrounded by honest, soulful music and down-to-earth, hardworking people from a young age. While I'm no longer affiliated with any religion, I cherish that time and how it shaped me into who I am today.
I've traveled extensively and lived in various parts of the US. Through all the influences and cultures I've absorbed—from my own country and from around the world—I've developed my own unique sound. I've been releasing music since 2012—and I haven't stopped. My style spans folk, blues, R&B, gospel, rock, metal, and everything in between. The common denominator: Everything I play comes from the heart, with feeling, passion, and a whole lot of soul. I mean what I say, and I feel what I play.
I sometimes cover songs I like, and even though some people only know me for that, I'm anything but a pure cover artist. If you come to one of my concerts expecting just one style, you might be surprised—our shows are a rollercoaster of emotions, energy, and different musical genres. I get bored easily and love mixing things up. So be prepared—and bring earplugs, just in case.
I've always been something of an underdog—no big label, no marketing company, no PR machine. And that suits me just fine. Everything I have, I've earned through hard work, determination, a bit of luck, and the amazing people I've met along the way. I've learned a lot of lessons the hard way—but that's okay. Because I've seen that with your support, with you listeners out there, I can make my wildest dreams come true.
