Roxette was a Swedish pop-rock duo formed in 1986 by Per Gessle (guitar, vocals, main songwriter) and Marie Fredriksson (lead vocals, piano). The group became world-famous for their signature blend of melodic pop rock, infectious hooks, and Marie’s powerful voice, which became their defining hallmark. During the late 1980s and 1990s, Roxette ranked among the world’s biggest pop acts, selling over 75 million records and scoring more than ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40.
Their breakthrough came with their second album Look Sharp! (1988), which produced two U.S. No. 1 hits – “The Look” and “Listen to Your Heart.” They cemented their success with Joyride (1991), a global sensation featuring hits like “Joyride,” “Fading Like a Flower,” and “Spending My Time.” Roxette became one of the few European acts to conquer the U.S. market on a scale comparable to the biggest pop icons.
Their music also found a permanent place in cinema history – the ballad “It Must Have Been Love” featured in the blockbuster Pretty Woman (1990) and went on to become one of the most-played songs of all time. Throughout the 1990s, Roxette continued their success with albums like Tourism (1992) and Crash! Boom! Bang! (1994), solidifying their status as global pop superstars.
Tragedy struck in 2002 when Marie Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumor, forcing her into a long hiatus. After treatment, she made a remarkable return to the stage, and Roxette embarked on several world tours between 2009 and 2016, including the Charm School Tour and XXX Tour. Sadly, Marie passed away in 2019, marking the end of the duo in its classic form.
Per Gessle has since emphasized that Roxette’s music is eternal and lives on through its fans. In 2022, he launched PG Roxette, a project aimed at continuing the band’s legacy with the support of longtime collaborators and backing vocalists.
Roxette’s legacy includes four U.S. Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles, dozens of platinum certifications, and the enduring status of one of Scandinavia’s greatest musical exports. To this day, they remain synonymous with the melodic pop-rock sound of the late 1980s and 1990s, their music standing as timeless classics.
