Planica is one of the world’s most renowned centres of ski jumping and ski flying and an important part of Slovenia’s sporting tradition. The valley beneath the Ponce mountains has been associated with international competitions since 1934 and has, over the decades, become synonymous with spectacular jumps, records and thrilling finales to the competition season. A special place is held by the Letalnica bratov Gorišek, one of the most famous ski flying hills in the world.
Today, Planica is home to the modern Planica Nordic Centre, where, alongside ski jumping and ski flying, cross-country skiing and other Nordic disciplines are also developed. Every year, the conclusion of the Ski Jumping World Cup in the valley beneath the Ponce mountains attracts huge crowds of fans, creating one of the most distinctive sporting atmospheres in Slovenia. Planica thus brings together top-level sport, a rich history, a stunning natural setting and Slovenia’s traditional passion for cheering on its athletes.
