Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Boston. The original lineup consisted of Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass guitar), and David Lovering (drums). Their signature style—built on the loud-quiet-loud dynamic—had a revolutionary impact on 1990s indie rock, influencing artists such as Nirvana, Radiohead, Weezer, and Pearl Jam. Their cult albums Surfer Rosa (1988) and Doolittle (1989), featuring tracks like “Debaser,” “Here Comes Your Man,” “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” and “Where Is My Mind?,” are now considered cornerstones of the genre.
After disbanding in 1993, Pixies reunited in 2004 and began a series of highly successful tours. Despite lineup changes—Kim Deal left the band in 2013 and was replaced by Paz Lenchantin, who herself departed in early 2024—the group has maintained strong momentum. Her successor, Emma Richardson (formerly of Band of Skulls), has brought fresh energy and a new dynamic to the band.
In fall 2024, Pixies released their ninth studio album, The Night the Zombies Came, featuring singles such as “Motoroller,” “You’re So Impatient,” “Chicken,” and “Oyster Beds.” The album blends the band’s trademark surrealist lyricism with a more mature, introspective tone shaped by decades of evolution.
Pixies remain one of the most influential alternative rock bands of all time. With their raw sound, poetic absurdity, and remarkable adaptability, they continue to hold legendary status in the modern era—revitalized with a new album and lineup.
