Passenger, born Michael David Rosenberg on May 17, 1984, in Brighton, England, is a distinctive indie folk singer-songwriter and musician who has captivated a global audience with his simple, emotionally rich music and lyrics that speak to real life. His musical style is often compared to that of Van Morrison, Neil Young, and John Prine.
He began his career in 2003 as a member of the band /Passenger., with which he released the album Wicked Man’s Rest in 2007. After the group disbanded in 2009, Rosenberg kept the name Passenger and started his solo career.
His breakthrough came in 2012 with the hit single “Let Her Go,” which topped charts worldwide and became one of the most-viewed songs on YouTube, with over 3.8 billion views. The track earned him a Brit Award nomination and the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for the "Most Performed Work."
To date, he has released 14 studio albums (one with the band and thirteen as a solo artist), including All the Little Lights (2012), Whispers (2014), Runaway (2018), Patchwork (2020), and Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted (2021), from which a portion of the proceeds was donated to the environmental organization Ecologi. His 2022 independent release, Birds That Flew and Ships That Sailed, entered the UK Top 40.
Passenger’s music is marked by acoustic arrangements, a slightly raspy voice, and a narrative style. The album Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted, written after a breakup, explores themes of loss, nostalgia, and emotional vulnerability. Songs like “Sword from the Stone” and “The Way That I Love You” were especially praised for their lyrical honesty and melancholic beauty.
In February 2025, it was revealed that Passenger would compose the music and lyrics for the upcoming stage musical The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which is set to premiere in May 2025 at the Minerva Theatre in Chichester.
