Paolo Conte (born January 6, 1937, in Asti, Italy) is a legendary Italian singer-songwriter, pianist, and lawyer, renowned for his distinctive gravelly voice and sophisticated blend of jazz, chanson, swing, and traditional Italian music. His works combine melodic elegance, ironic detachment, and poetic storytelling, earning him recognition as one of the greatest European musical artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
He first gained prominence as a songwriter for other performers – one of his early successes was Azzurro (1968), made famous by Adriano Celentano, which went on to become one of the most iconic Italian songs of all time. In the 1970s, Conte turned to a solo career; albums such as Paolo Conte (1974), Un gelato al limon (1979), and Paris Milonga (1981) introduced him to a broader audience. His international breakthrough came with the album Via con me (1981), whose title track (It’s Wonderful) became his signature song and a global jazz–chanson classic.
He followed with acclaimed albums like Aguaplano (1987), Novecento (1992), and Reveries (2003), which cemented his reputation as a master of atmospheric, narrative-driven music. Conte’s style weaves together cabaret, tango, boogie-woogie, French chanson, and American swing, often infused with subtle humor and cinematic flair. Many of his songs have appeared in films and advertising campaigns, further enhancing his international recognition.
Over more than five decades of creativity, Paolo Conte has released over 20 albums and received numerous prestigious awards, including the Tenco Prize and honors for lifetime achievement. Well into the 1990s and 2000s, he continued to fill concert halls across Europe and the United States, with his live performances celebrated for their intimate atmosphere and masterful musical dialogue with the audience.
