Pankrti, formed in 1977 in Ljubljana, are considered the first punk rock band behind the Iron Curtain and pioneers of the punk movement in socialist Yugoslavia. The band was founded by Gregor Tomc and Peter Lovšin, who quickly captured the attention of youth and authorities alike with their provocative and politically charged lyrics. Their music was heavily inspired by British punk, but they developed a distinctive style that reflected the social realities of the time.
Their debut album Dolgcajt (1980) became a cult record, breaking the monotony of the music scene and bringing a fresh wave of rebellion. It was followed by Državni ljubimci (1982), which was declared the best Yugoslav album of the year, Rdeči album (1984), featuring a punk rendition of the revolutionary song “Bandiera Rossa,” and Sexpok (1987), their last studio release before the band disbanded.
Pankrti have reunited several times for special occasions, most notably in 2007 for their 30th anniversary, with sold-out concerts in Ljubljana, Belgrade, and Zagreb. In 2022, they were awarded a national decoration for their contribution to Slovenian culture and social critique.
