ORATORIO MARKING THE 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MARIBOR
A grand musical narrative of faith, history and cultural heritage
26 November 2026 | Maribor Cathedral | World premiere
As part of the three-year celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Maribor, Maribor Cathedral will host the premiere of a new Slovenian oratorio dedicated to this historic milestone and the archdiocese’s rich spiritual, historical and cultural heritage.
At the heart of the musical narrative is Blessed Anton Martin Slomšek, one of the most influential figures in Slovenian Church and national history. His work had a profound impact on the development of the diocese, the city of Maribor and Slovenia as a whole.
Join us for an exceptional musical event that brings together eight centuries of history, spirituality and cultural tradition through the power of music.
Eight centuries of history brought to life through music
The oratorio is being created as a significant artistic contribution to the celebrations of the archdiocese’s 800th anniversary. Combining choral singing, solo voices and orchestral music, it will explore a rich spiritual heritage and the historical turning points that shaped the life of the Church in Styria.
Particular attention will be given to Anton Martin Slomšek, his commitment to the Slovenian language, education and culture, and his historic decision to move the seat of the Diocese of Lavant from Sankt Andrä in Austrian Carinthia to Maribor in 1859.
This decision played a key role in Maribor’s subsequent development, strengthening its position as a spiritual, cultural and educational centre.
The oratorio is both a reflection on the past and a musical tribute to a heritage that continues to unite and inspire us today.
Outstanding creators and performers
The music is composed by Simon Robinson, an internationally acclaimed composer and conductor, who will also conduct the performance in collaboration with choirmaster Aleš Marčič. The libretto is written by Dr Aleš Maver and Lilijana Urlep, MA, two distinguished historians with expertise in Church and cultural history.
Featuring:
- Combined choirs:
- Youth Choir of the Anton Martin Slomšek Diocesan Grammar School, Maribor (choirmaster Špela Drašler)
- Maribor Cathedral Choir (choirmaster Mirjam Strlič)
- Maribor Concert Choir (choirmaster Aleš Marčič)
- Children’s and Youth Choir of the Anton Martin Slomšek Music and Ballet School
