David Byrne – Who Is The Sky?
with Ghost Train Orchestra
After closing the remarkably successful chapter of American Utopia, David Byrne returned in 2023 to a more intensive period of songwriting. During the quieter interlude, he cooked, drew, and gathered fragments of lyrics that slowly began to crystallize into new songs. Like many of us, he found himself circling questions about purpose, work, and human connection. The answers, or perhaps beautifully shaped attempts at them, are woven into Who Is The Sky?, his first collaboration with Grammy winning producer Kid Harpoon and the New York chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra.
The album continues the optimistic and humanistic threads of American Utopia, exploring connection, the absurdities of everyday life, and the possibility of community in a chaotic world. True to Byrne’s spirit, the music balances on a fine line between avant garde exploration and luminous pop accessibility, infused with wit, warmth, and unmistakable narrative flair.
Guest appearances include Hayley Williams of Paramore, longtime collaborator St. Vincent, and drummer Tom Skinner of The Smile. The orchestral arrangements by Ghost Train Orchestra, built on a richly textured palette of strings, woodwinds, and brass, intertwine with infectious rhythms and a clear devotion to storytelling and melody.
Byrne invited Ghost Train Orchestra to collaborate after hearing their album Songs and Symphoniques, created with Kronos Quartet and dedicated to the music of Moondog. Kid Harpoon brought structural clarity and a sharp narrative instinct to the production, shaping the material without sanding down its eccentric edges.
Who Is The Sky? unfolds like a cinematic skyline at dusk: playful yet reflective, emotionally open yet architecturally precise. It confirms Byrne’s rare ability to remain curious, inventive, and unexpectedly accessible even in a later creative chapter, still asking big questions, still dancing while he does it.
