Plot:
The courtesan Violetta Valery hosts a party in her Parisian salon. Her young admirer, Alfredo Germont, begins a drinking song to impress her. After Violetta suffers a coughing fit, Alfredo seizes the opportunity to declare the seriousness of his desire. Uncertain of her own feelings, she gives him a camellia blossom as a token. He may return once it has withered.
Three months later, Violetta and Alfredo are living a carefree life in the countryside at Violetta's expense. When Alfredo realizes this with shame, he leaves for Paris to raise his own money.
During this time, Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, visits Violetta to demand that she break up with his son. Her unsuitable relationship stood in the way of his daughter's happiness, whose socially appropriate union was now in jeopardy. Violetta agreed, knowing she was already doomed to die. She was suffering from consumption. Impressed by her sincerity and devotion, Germont took his leave.
Upon his return, Alfredo found a distraught Violetta writing a letter. She quickly left, and a messenger delivered her farewell letter to Alfredo. In despair, he read that she had decided to return to her old lifestyle and was renouncing him.
Germont tries to comfort his son with concern, but in vain. After a public outburst at a party, during which Alfredo, driven by jealousy, hurls unspeakable insults at Violetta, she withdraws completely.
Months later, Violetta's condition deteriorates dramatically. Germont writes to her, saying he has informed Alfredo of their agreement and that he intends to return to her soon. Violetta knows they have no future together and bids farewell to her love and her life.
Suddenly, Alfredo bursts in, and this glimmer of happiness seems to rekindle all hope. Germont appears and reaffirms his love, but it is too late. Violetta gives Alfredo a picture of herself, asking him to find a new bride and new happiness. She says she will pray for this in heaven. She rises one last time, ready to die.
