James Blunt (born February 22, 1974, as James Hillier Blount) is a British singer-songwriter who began his career as an officer in the British Royal Guard before achieving global success in 2004 with his debut album Back to Bedlam. The single "You're Beautiful" became an international hit, and the album went on to become the best-selling album of the decade in the UK.
His seventh studio album, Who We Used to Be, released in October 2023, coincided with the publication of his autobiographical book Loosely Based on a Made-Up Story. Standout tracks include "The Girl That Never Was", a heartfelt song about the loss of an unborn child, as well as "Beside You" and "All The Love That I Ever Needed", which showcase his maturity as a songwriter and performer.
In April 2025, he broadened his stylistic range with the release of the ballad "Tears Dry Tonight", in collaboration with Australian DJ Cyril.
Despite global fame, Blunt is known for his down-to-earth nature and sharp self-deprecating humor. In interviews, he has spoken openly about his privileged upbringing—being the son of a military officer and educated at a boarding school—once joking he’d “punch his younger self in the face for being so naive and entitled.” His candor and wit have become trademarks of his public persona, particularly on social media.
Outside of music, Blunt runs James Blunt Limited, a company that reported a profit of £1.9 million in 2023/24. His personal wealth is estimated to exceed £8.8 million, part of which he used to buy a villa in Ibiza—thanks largely to the continued success of You're Beautiful.
Today, James Blunt embodies a rare balance between emotional sincerity and comedic detachment. His music remains personal, distinct, and accessible, while his ongoing Back to Bedlam 20th Anniversary Tour confirms his status as one of the few artists who can make a lasting cultural impact with simple yet unforgettable songs.
