Gogol Bordello is an American music band formed in 1999 in New York City's Lower East Side. The group is known for its unique "gypsy punk" style, which combines elements of punk rock with Romani and Eastern European folk music. Their performances are full of energy and theatricality, setting them apart from other music acts.
The band's frontman is Eugene Hütz, a Ukrainian immigrant who named the group after writer Nikolai Gogol as a tribute to Ukrainian culture. Hütz is known for his charismatic stage presence and also acted in the film "Everything Is Illuminated" (2005), for which the band contributed the song "Start Wearing Purple" to the soundtrack.
The band has released several albums, the most notable being "Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike" (2005), "Super Taranta!" (2007), and "Trans-Continental Hustle" (2010), which was produced by Rick Rubin. Their latest album, "Solidaritine" (2022), was created in response to the war in Ukraine and features collaborations with artists such as Jello Biafra, Tré Cool, and Joe Lally.
