Since 2005, the otherwise peacefull and quiet Burgenland has been shaken once a year by the sound of some of the most successful bands in the world. Nova Rock has become an institution that draws music fans from Austria and across Europe to the Pannonia Fields II in Nickelsdorf. Over the course of four days, visitors are treated to a lineup featuring the best acts from rock, metal, punk, alternative, and hip-hop.
World stars rock the countryside
Fewer than 2,000 people live in the picturesque village of Nickelsdorf in northern Burgenland. But for four days each summer, that changes dramatically: around 200,000 guests buy tickets for Nova Rock, making it Austria’s largest festival. Surrounded by vast fields and towering wind turbines, top rock bands take turns on stage. Although conditions at the first Nova Rock in 2005 were somewhat different, the organizers went all in right from the start. Headliners like Green Day, System Of A Down, Die Ärzte, and The Prodigy made fans of heavier music’s hearts race. Only the weather failed to cooperate, so while the first edition wasn’t completely washed out, it remains remembered as a wet and windy experience.
Nova Rock grows
In the years that followed, the organizers learned from the debut and created an even better experience for visitors from Austria and abroad. Moving from the original Pannonia Fields to the larger Pannonia Fields II made it possible to set up a second stage, allowing shows to alternate. Large screens—where major sporting events can be watched live in a dedicated area—have also been part of the festival since its second edition in 2006. Visitors can also enjoy a barbecue area, numerous special events, a huge campsite, and an additional wheelchair-accessible section.
The musical diversity offered in subsequent years was already evident in 2006: with classics like Guns N’ Roses, Motörhead, and Metallica; modern crowd-pullers like Tool and Queens Of The Stone Age; and genre-defying acts like Seeed and Massive Attack, there was something for almost every taste. This willingness to look beyond strict genre boundaries continues to define Nova Rock to this day.
New records and a colorful lineup of stars
The festival’s surrounding experience has also continued to reach new heights. In 2009, the main stage became the largest festival stage in Europe. Tickets are usually sold out long before the first performances, and for many visitors, the annual trip to Nova Rock has become a cherished tradition. The 2011 edition featured five stages for the first time, hosting not only Linkin Park and Iron Maiden, but also comedian-musician Otto and the Friesenjungs, bringing plenty of fun to the crowd.
Hard sounds meet pop and hip-hop
After Nova Rock could not take place in 2020 and 2021, a new attendance record was set in 2022. For many, the festival felt like a class reunion and was a major success for both fans and organizers. Alongside Muse, Volbeat, and Kraftklub, performances by Haddaway & Dr. Alban, Deichkind, and Alligatoah showed that musical boundaries remain wide open. At the same time, local newcomers are consistently given a stage alongside national and international heavyweights.
This mix of big and small acts, rock, pop, punk, metal, and hip-hop, as well as local and international bands, has made Nova Rock one of Europe’s most popular festivals from day one.
