Elemental is one of the most recognizable and longest-running hip hop groups in the former Yugoslavia, founded in 1998 in Zagreb. The group was formed by rappers Mirela Priselac – Remi and Luka Tralić – Shot, who quickly established themselves with a clear message, powerful lyrics, and a distinctive sound in which hip hop blended with funk, soul, reggae, and later pop-rock elements. The name “Elemental” comes from the word element, symbolizing a basic building block – in this case, a unit that connects music, message, and audience.
Their debut album Moj, njegov i njen svijet (2000) was still raw but already showed the direction of their creativity – authentic hip hop with a socially critical note. The real breakthrough came with the album Tempo Velegrada – Demiurg / Muboa (2002), where they developed more complex lyrics and a broader sound, followed by Male stvari (2004), which cemented their position on the scene.
The mid-2000s brought greater recognition with singles such as “Iz dana u dan”, “Romantika”, “Goli i bosi”, and “Voda” – songs that brought them closer to a wider audience while staying true to their socially engaged expression. The album Vertigo (2005) confirmed their maturity, while Pod pritiskom (2008) put a stronger emphasis on political and reflective themes.
Over time, the band became a collective with a larger lineup of musicians – in addition to Remi and Shot, they added guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and backing vocals, which allowed for a richer live experience and broader musical experimentation. Their album Vertigo won a Porin Award, and Remi became one of the most prominent female figures in Balkan hip hop.
In 2013, they released U redu je, which brought them closer to a pop audience while retaining authentic songwriting. This was followed by Tijelo (2016), exploring themes of intimacy, corporeality, and personal freedom, and Ilica (2020), released during the pandemic and conceived as a raw reflection of contemporary life in an urban environment.
Elemental are known for their highly energetic and interactive performances, where rap intertwines with live instruments, improvisation, and a warm connection with the audience. Their music carries strong messages about freedom, equality, love, political responsibility, and social critique, making them a favorite among generations who grew up with their songs.
