Deadmau5 (real name Joel Thomas Zimmerman, born January 5, 1981 in Niagara Falls, Ontario) is a Canadian producer, DJ, and innovator considered one of the most influential electronic music creators of the past two decades. His style spans progressive house, electro house, and techno experimentation (as Testpilot), and he’s also known for his iconic glowing “mau5” helmet.
He broke through with the album Random Album Title (2008), featuring hits like Faxing Berlin, I Remember (with Kaskade), and Ghosts 'n' Stuff (with Rob Swire). This was followed by albums such as For Lack of a Better Name (2009), 4×4=12 (2010), and others, which brought him multiple Grammy nominations, three Juno Awards, and wide international acclaim.
Deadmau5 is also the founder of his own label Mau5trap, which became a launchpad for many artists on the electronic scene. In March 2025, he sold the label and its catalog of over 4,000 tracks to Create Music Group for more than $55 million, marking one of the biggest catalog sales in modern electronic music.
His concerts are technically elaborate spectacles: the Retro5pective tour series features a blend of classics, rarely heard tracks, and modern collaborations. In 2024, he hosted friends and collaborators at Brooklyn Mirage (NYC), including Steve Duda (BSOD), HAYLA, Kiesza, and LIGHTS, reaffirming his role as a connector in the electronic arts community.
Beyond music, he is also active as a technological innovator — in collaboration with 45Drives, he is developing the 45Studio project, a content creator infrastructure focused on silent operation, open-source architecture, and community use. This reflects his vision of music as an interdisciplinary art form.
