On 26 December, Cankarjev dom will welcome one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary sevdah, Božo Vrećo. An artist of remarkable vocal expression and stage presence, he takes his music beyond the boundaries of the traditional genre, inviting listeners into a world where love, longing, spirituality and freedom intertwine.
A singer and sevdah interpreter from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Božo Vrećo combines the traditional musical heritage of the Balkans with a deeply personal, contemporary and emotionally powerful artistic vision.
His performance at Cankarjev dom promises an experience that goes far beyond a conventional concert. For Vrećo, sevdah is more than a musical tradition: it is a space for intimate expression, inner freedom and universal human emotion. His interpretations bring age-old melodies together with contemporary arrangements, a sense of mysticism and deeply personal poetry.
With his unique vocal expression and fearless artistic approach, Božo Vrećo has become one of the most recognisable figures in contemporary sevdah. Distinguished by its lyrical tenor quality, his voice moves between tenderness and powerful emotional intensity, while remaining deeply rooted in the musical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After developing his musical career as a member of the ensemble Halka, he went on to pursue a solo career, shaping a distinctive style and songwriting voice. Through his albums, he has taken traditional sevdah into new sonic territory, reaching audiences across generations and geographical borders.
His artistic significance has also been recognised by international media, including The New York Times and Spain’s El Periódico. His creative world extends beyond music: in 2023, the documentary Maldita – A Love Song to Sarajevo, in which he participated, won Spain’s Goya Award for Best Documentary Short Film.
