Beatsteaks are a German alternative‑punk rock band formed in Berlin in 1995 by Peter Baumann, Bernd Kurtzke, Stefan Hircher, Alexander Rosswaag, and, shortly after, frontman Arnim Teutoburg‑Weiß . They cut their teeth in the underground scene, winning a Battle of the Bands in 1996 and opening for the Sex Pistols in Berlin—marking only their tenth gig.
Their debut album, 48/49 (1997), named after the address of their rehearsal space, showcased hardcore punk roots, followed by Launched (2000) on Epitaph and Living Targets (2002), which brought their first radio hits. The breakthrough arrived with the energetic Smack Smash (2004), produced by Moses Schneider; tracks like “I Don’t Care As Long As You Sing” and “Hand in Hand” became staples on MTV Germany and propelled the band into the mainstream, earning gold and later platinum certification.
Long known for their explosive live shows, Beatsteaks have released nine studio albums, sold over 18 million records in German-speaking countries, and received multiple awards including “Best German Act” at the MTV EMAs and several 1Live Krone honors. In 2024, they returned with PLEASE, their first album in seven years, and embarked on the ongoing “Please” tour—in 2025 celebrating 30 years with two massive shows at Berlin’s Max-Schmeling-Halle and a dynamic lighting production that underscores their signature energy.
Their music blends aggressive punk drive with melodic hooks and occasional indie‑rock or post‑grunge flourishes, with critics praising Smack Smash for its gritty hooks and guitar power. Above all, Beatsteaks remain beloved for their authenticity, political engagement, and the ability to make fans “rock out” at live shows.
