alt-J is a British indie rock band formed in 2007 in Leeds, quickly establishing itself as one of the most distinctive modern alternative acts thanks to its unconventional sonic architecture, multi-layered arrangements, and the unique voice of Joe Newman. Alongside Newman (guitar, vocals), the group consists of Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards, vocals) and Thom Sonny Green (drums), while original bassist Gwil Sainsbury left the band in 2014.
Their debut album An Awesome Wave (2012) received critical acclaim and won the prestigious Mercury Prize, praised for its innovative blend of indie rock, folk, electronica, and art pop. The album features tracks such as Breezeblocks, Taro, and Something Good, which brought them international recognition. It was followed by This Is All Yours (2014), Grammy-nominated, containing the hit Left Hand Free and the ethereal Hunger of the Pine.
In 2017, they released their third album Relaxer, exploring even more experimental structures and including a reinterpretation of House of the Rising Sun. After a brief hiatus, the band returned in 2022 with The Dream, an album that combined introspective ballads with rhythmically complex tracks such as U&ME, Hard Drive Gold, and Get Better.
alt-J are known for incorporating unusual time signatures, subtle electronic layers, and lyrics filled with literary and cinematic references. Their live shows are celebrated for their refined visual aesthetics and minimalist yet atmospheric lighting installations, creating an almost theatrical experience.
