Akon

Akon, born Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam in 1973, is a Senegalese-American singer, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who rose to international prominence in the early 2000s. He first gained widespread attention with the 2004 single “Locked Up,” and firmly established himself with the hit “Lonely” from his debut album Trouble. His second album, Konvicted (2006), marked the peak of his commercial success, producing chart-topping singles such as “I Wanna Love You,” “Smack That,” and “Don’t Matter.” With these achievements, Akon became the first solo artist to simultaneously occupy the top two positions on the Billboard Hot 100 on two separate occasions.

He continued his success with Freedom (2008), featuring the popular single “Right Now (Na Na Na).” In 2019, he explored new musical directions, incorporating reggaeton, Latin influences, and Afrobeats on the albums El Negreeto and Akonda. Beyond his own recording career, Akon founded the labels Konvict Muzik and KonLive Distribution, helping launch artists such as Lady Gaga, T-Pain, and French Montana. Philanthropy is also a major part of his work: through the Akon Lighting Africa initiative, he supports electrification projects across African countries, and he is developing the ambitious Akon City project in Senegal.
