Vesna Zmijanac (born January 4, 1957, in Nikšić, then Yugoslavia, now Montenegro) is one of the most recognizable singers in Balkan folk and turbo-folk music. With her emotional depth, melancholic interpretation, and distinctive voice, she earned the nickname “Queen of Sorrow,” a title that still holds more than four decades into her career.
She began her professional rise in 1979 with the single Hvala ti za sve, a collaboration with the legendary Šaban Šaulić. By the 1980s, she had become one of the central stars of the Yugoslav folk scene — her album Istina (1986) sold over 800,000 copies, followed the next year by the hit Dođi što pre. Among her most iconic songs are Nevera moja, Malo po malo, the duet with Dino Merlin Kad zamirišu jorgovani (1988), and Svatovi (1990), all of which have become an indelible part of the region’s musical heritage.
Vesna Zmijanac has released fourteen studio albums and sold over 6.7 million records, making her one of the commercially most successful female singers of the former Yugoslavia. Her ballads about love, loss, and nostalgia continue to be played on the radio and performed live.
Although her last album Sokole was released in 2011, Vesna remains highly active in concert — performing throughout the Balkans, including Slovenia, especially at major venues such as Arena Belgrade. After undergoing heart surgery in 2024 (bypass), she quickly returned to the stage, now performing only on weekends as advised by her doctors. Her dedication to her audience, music, and stage presence remains true to the spirit of her golden career.
