Divlje jagode are a legendary hard rock/heavy metal band from the Balkans, formed in 1977 in Bihać (then Yugoslavia) under the leadership of guitarist Sead “Zele” Lipovača, who remains the group’s main creative force to this day. They are regarded as pioneers and key shapers of the rock and metal sound in the former Yugoslavia. Their music blends powerful guitar riffs, melodic choruses, and energetic, raw stage performances.
Their first major breakthrough came with the self-titled album Divlje jagode (1979), followed by a string of successful records, including Stakleni hotel (1981), Čarobnjaci (1983), and Vatra (1985). In the 1980s, they became one of the most recognizable rock bands in the region, with hits such as “Motori”, “Jedina moja”, “Let na drugi svijet”, “Marija”, and “Autostop”, which are still considered evergreen classics today. The lyrics often intertwine themes of love, freedom, youthful passion, and rock ’n’ roll attitude, all backed by their signature heavy metal energy.
One of the highlights of their career was breaking into the international market – in the mid-1980s, they collaborated with the German label Teldec and recorded in Berlin, where they produced an English-language version of the album Wild Strawberries. This opened doors beyond the Balkans and enabled them to work with top producers.
Although the band has gone through numerous lineup changes over the years, Zele Lipovača has remained the constant and driving force. At various times, they have worked with some of the region’s most respected singers and musicians, including Alen Islamović (later frontman of Bijelo dugme), Mladen Vojičić Tifa, and others.
Their performances are always energetic, filled with nostalgia, yet remain fresh thanks to their ever-evolving creative approach.
