Warpaint is an American indie rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 2004. The group consists of Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals, guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums). The band is known for their distinctive blend of art rock, dream pop, psychedelic rock, and trip hop, creating atmospheric, introspective music filled with layered arrangements and hypnotic vocals.
They gained early attention with their EP Exquisite Corpse (2008), mixed by John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers). The EP revealed their sonic signature: intertwining vocals, subtle guitar textures, dynamic rhythms, and a keen sense for sonic exploration. Critics quickly recognized them as a fresh voice on the California alternative scene.
Warpaint’s creative process is rooted in collective dynamics – all members contribute to songwriting, often through improvisation, sonic experimentation, and intuitive merging of ideas. Their music doesn’t follow traditional structures but rather builds emotional soundscapes that guide the listener into contemplative, almost meditative worlds.
They are also known for powerful live performances, where their music gains additional intensity and an improvisational spirit. Over the years, they have developed a strong visual and stylistic aesthetic, including elements of visual art, style, and movement, positioning them among the most important representatives of the contemporary female alternative scene.
