The dark, romantic story of the Flying Dutchman, who has been condemned to sail his ship forever as an undead, is Wagner’s fourth opera. Other than his three earlier operas, the Flying Dutchman is already part of those works that Wagner permitted to be staged in Bayreuth as well.
